Manuscript for fiction

Prologue

“Mommy, why do people stare at me

sometimes?” Camille Carter looked up into her mother’s eyes waiting for an answer.

“Because people stare at ugly things. Now leave me alone. My soaps are on.” Mary Carter glowered at her daughter and waved her away. Camille watched her swallow more of the brown liquid in the glass, wipe her boney fingers across her thin, red lips, and walked away.

The Muse – How To Invite Its Presence

The muse is a common topic of conversation among writers, but difficult to find a concrete definition for this important force that makes the words sing on a page like a perfect symphony written by unseen angels.

The Greek Mythologies say that Zeus had nine daughters who were called The Muse.  One of those daughters, Clio the "Proclaimer," is the muse of history and is often seen sitting with a scroll and accompanied by a chest of books. She has been credited with introducing the Phoenician alphabet into Greece.  There were other Muse Sisters who inspired folks to dance until death and sing until throats collapsed.

Whether we believe in spirits, the writing muse is real and important to those of us writing manuscripts, though I don’t think we want to write until our fingers fall off!  Nevertheless, we’d like to write with inspirational flow all the time.  But the muse is fickle.

Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul

I awakened to a fresh breeze blowing through my bedroom window, promising the return of spring. As I looked outside what little patches of snow dotted the lawn was gone.  The gardener worked on his lawnmower readying it for the first cut of the new season, birds chirped with all the glory of a symphony, and I detected a few tiny buds on the trees.  Children added their own happy harmony as they played at the playground, mothers smiled with pride, chatting with one another.  I imagined they shared stories about their children’s triumphs, mishaps, goals, and who would hold the next play date at their house.

Everything seemed almost perfect. The only thing missing for me was that I couldn’t be included in the joyous throng of mothers and children.

From an article about Hookworms for a client.

Your reptile needs treats occasionally to supplement their vegetarian lifestyle. Sometimes your reptile friend will go on a hunger strike leaving you frustrated and afraid your pet will die. Enter the Goliath Horn Worm, a soft-bodied insect, green in color, which to your lizard or snake is like a chunk of chocolate to us. The Hornworm looks something like a caterpillar but can brag that its 68% protein, and only 20.7% fat.  If your reptile seems sluggish, which they can be due to boredom with their usual meal, feed it a Hornworm.

E-book about selling on E-bay

Introduction

Everyday, people from all over the world can access millions of items listed on eBay across thousands of categories.  Since theirs is an international marketplace, sellers are able to take advantage of a colossal venue, which would otherwise cost thousands of dollars for an individual to open and operate.  If you have tried to set up a business, or know someone else who has tried, you appreciate the many facets of the whole apparatus: E-mail, advertising in different venues, bookkeeping, accounts receivable and payable, web site content and hosting, having a popular item or service to market, and keeping it stock, follow up with automated response software, creating a database of customers and mailing lists, not to mention all of the store overhead and payroll…well, the list goes on and on.  The expense adds up quickly, but the machine of your business requires at least all of this plus your expertise if you are going to be successful.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed?  Well, don’t. eBay has created a way for you to have all of the tools you need, and more, at your fingertips twenty-four hours a day. They have made it simple to open your personal cyber-door storefront for the sale of just about anything you can think of.  A few restrictions are in place only to protect you as a seller and your buyers from anything that could be offensive or promoted as a scam.

I wish I wasn’t ugly.

She heard the back door open and her father calling for her. He stamped his boots on the rug and hung up his coat. “How’s my little girl today?” He stopped down to pick up his daughter and she put her arms around his neck and hugged.

“Daddy, why am I ugly?”

“Who said you’re ugly, Angel?” He gently put her down and hung his coat on the rack.

“Do you think I’m ugly?” Cami looked up into her father’s deep dark eyes with hope on her face.

Eugene Carter ruffled her hair and smiled. “You’re the most beautiful little girl in the whole world. Okay? Where’s your mom?”

Just as Camille was about to point in the direction of the living room, Mother’s cackling voice was heard. “Is that you Gene? Don’t be lookin’ for dinner. I wanna go out tonight. Find a sitter.”

Camille looked up into her father’s eyes pleading not to be left behind yet again.
